INTRODUCTION
MSCR is a database that lists volunteers who have registered to donate their blood stem cells to patients in need. MSCR is a collaboration between the Ministry of Health Malaysia (Institute for Medical Research) and the National Cancer Council (MAKNA), established in December 2000. In Malaysia, blood stem cell transplants are performed to treat patients suffering from Leukemia or Thalassemia. Additionally, diseases such as Lymphoma, Aplastic Anemia, Immunodeficiency, and many others also require blood stem cell transplants.
Typically, patients in need of a blood stem cell transplant are those who do not have a match among their siblings. Therefore, they need to search for a match among unrelated individuals. However, the chances of finding a matching donor are very slim, which heavily depends on the number of registrants. The more registrants, the higher the chances of finding a match.
